Diarrhea is a very common problem for dogs.  Many times it begins with a dietary indiscretion like eating dead animals, fish, wild game or rotting plant materials.

When do you bring your pet with diarrhea to the vet?

When your pet has accidents inside the house-  sometimes it is contagious to humans and contamination of your home has to be minimized
When your pet feels sick- If your pet is listless, not eating, running a fever It is time for a exam
When your pet  has had the diarrhea for more then a day.  (Don't wait a day if any of these other questions are yes)
When there is blood or mucus on the diarrhea
When your pet is old or sick
When your pet is very young or very small
When you have infants or immune suppressed animals or people in your home

Please be smart, wear gloves to clean up diarrhea and wash your hands well after cleaning
Bring in a one inch sample of the diarrhea if possible
Think about what your animal may have eaten or what sick dogs or people he/she was around.  Any toxic exposures?

How about over the counter medications?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions don't wait, don't give anything until you see your vet
If they are young, healthy and not feeling sick you may consider asking your vet if one dose of imodium will help decrease accidents in the house.  If your dog (not cat) is not on any other medications ask your vet if  one dose of pepto bismol  would be safe.
